Heirloom Jewellery Redesign in Toronto: What to Expect and How the Process Works
Redesigning heirloom jewellery is one of my favourite ways to help clients reconnect with pieces that hold deep sentimental meaning. Many people inherit beautiful jewellery from parents, grandparents, or loved ones, yet the design no longer reflects their personal style or the way they wear it today.
When you collaborate with me on a jewellery redesign created in our Toronto studio, the goal is not simply to change the appearance of an old piece. Instead, we thoughtfully transform your heirloom jewellery into something modern, wearable, and meaningful while preserving its history and sentimental meaning.
Whether you are redesigning a family ring, vintage necklace, inherited earrings, or an heirloom bracelet, I guide you through each step of the process so it’s creative, enjoyable, and results in a beautiful new chapter for your jewellery.
Every redesign project is created in my jewellery studio in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood. Many clients visit from nearby east-end communities such as Riverside, the Beaches, Danforth, and Leaside, from across the GTA, or collaborate with me from elsewhere in Canada and the United States. If you have jewellery tucked away in a drawer that you rarely wear but cannot part with, redesign can be a wonderful way to transform it into something you’ll truly love wearing again.

At a Glance: How Our Jewellery Redesign Process Works
Every heirloom jewellery redesign project is personalized and unique, but here is what you can typically expect when we work together:
- Your redesigned piece will be carefully designed and handcrafted in my Toronto studio, often incorporating gemstones from your existing jewellery. Many heirloom pieces contain beautiful diamonds, sapphires, or other gemstones that can easily be reset into a completely new design. We can also complement your heirlooms with new custom-selected gems to realize your vision.
- The design process begins with a friendly phone conversation where you can share the story behind your jewellery and your vision for its future.
- During this call, I’ll walk you through the custom jewellery design process and answer any questions you may have. We’ll also discuss the key details I need to prepare and send your price quote shortly after our conversation.
- We’ll then meet in the studio to inspect your current jewellery, confirm that the stones are suitable for resetting, and refine your new design together. If you’re not sure how you’d like to remodel your heirlooms, we’ll explore ideas based on your personal style and the character of your jewellery and gemstones.
- Most redesign projects involve two visits to the studio, while most of the collaboration takes place via phone and email:
- one meeting to evaluate your jewellery and explore design ideas
- one visit to reveal and collect your finished piece
- If you live outside Toronto, we can collaborate just as easily through phone or video meetings and engage secure shipping services when required.

The Jewellery Redesign Process: Step by Step
Redesigning jewellery is a collaborative process. Whether we are creating a custom ring, necklace, bracelet, or pair of earrings, the steps are very similar.
Step 1: Book Your Jewellery Redesign Call
Our work together begins with an informative phone conversation about your jewellery, its story, and your vision for its new design. I’ll also answer your questions and recommend your custom design plan.
To help me provide as much information and advice as possible, it’s best to book your custom design call online, provide an overview of what you’d like to create, and upload photos of your current jewelry and inspiration images for the new design.
After our call, I will prepare and send you a detailed price quote based on the design and materials we discussed.
Step 2: Meet in Our Toronto Studio to Examine Your Heirlooms and Explore Design Ideas
If the price quote and design plan feel right for you, we’ll meet in my jewellery studio in Leslieville, Toronto. Please bring the jewellery you’d like to restyle so we can look at it together, confirm it’s suitable for redesign, and continue refining your new design.
Some clients bring a single sentimental piece, while others bring several items that could potentially be combined into one meaningful design.
We’ll also take careful measurements and identify key characteristics of the heirloom gems you leave for safekeeping to assure you that they are the same gems that we set in your new design.
Just as importantly, we’ll take the necessary measurements such as your ring size, necklace length, and bracelet length so that your new design fits you perfectly.
During this meeting, we often sketch several design options together and review how different choices affect the overall look of the piece.
Step 3: Creating Your Custom Jewellery Design
Once the design direction feels clear, I translate our ideas into a detailed concept.
Depending on the project, this may include:
- hand sketches
- hand-carved wax models
- digital renderings (CAD)
This stage allows you to visualize the piece from multiple angles and refine any details before production begins.
Together, we adjust proportions and design elements until everything feels balanced, comfortable, and uniquely yours.
Step 4: Handcrafting Your Jewellery in Our Toronto Studio
After the design is approved, I begin crafting your redesigned jewellery piece in my Toronto custom jewellery studio.
Each piece is handmade using traditional goldsmithing techniques combined with modern precision tools. If your redesign incorporates heirloom gemstones, I take great care to ensure they are set securely and beautifully.
Because the jewellery is handcrafted locally in Toronto, I maintain close control over every stage of production, including making sure the gems are securely set and aligned and that your new jewelry is both comfortable and durable.
Step 5: Appraisal
Once your ring is completed, it will be appraised by a trusted, GIA-accredited appraiser. You will receive a certificate confirming your ring’s value. Most insurance companies will request a copy of this certificate to insure your ring.
Step 6: Jewellery Care & Warranty
The final reveal is often one of the most emotional moments of the redesign process.
Clients frequently tell me that seeing their heirloom jewellery transformed into something new feels incredibly special. The stones and materials may be familiar, but the design now reflects their own personal style.
When your redesigned piece is complete, I will also provide guidance on caring for your bespoke jewellery so it remains beautiful for many years.
You can also review our Jewellery Care Guide for helpful and tested tips to keep your jewelry clean and sparkling.
Your redesigned jewellery will be crafted with great care so it can be worn and enjoyed for many years to come. In the unlikely event that something becomes damaged due to a manufacturing defect or a strong impact, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ll guide you on the next steps, which will likely involve bringing your piece to the studio so we can make the necessary repairs. Repairs related to manufacturing defects will be covered, while repairs resulting from accidental impacts may involve a fee.

Keeping Heirloom Jewellery Modern
One of the most exciting parts of heirloom jewellery redesign in Toronto is helping clients reinterpret traditional pieces in a way that feels personal, fresh, and contemporary.
Here are popular design elements our clients love to modernize their new jewelry:
- minimalist settings
- bezel settings that protect stones
- delicate stacking rings
- low-profile rings for everyday wear
- organic, nature-inspired designs
These styles allow heirloom gemstones to shine while creating jewellery that feels effortless and current.

Frequently Asked Questions About Jewellery Redesign
Is Jewellery Redesign More Affordable Than Creating a New Piece?
One of the most common questions clients ask is whether remodelling jewellery is more affordable than starting from scratch.
In many cases, it can be, especially if you already have valuable gemstones that can be reset into your new design. If you have gold you no longer wear and wish to part with, you’re welcome to trade it in for credit to help offset the cost of your redesign. With gold prices currently so high, many clients are pleasantly surprised by the value of their unworn pieces.
However, the final cost depends on several factors:
- design complexity, karat gold, and size
- additional new gemstones custom-sourced for you
- craftsmanship and labour
The goal of jewellery redesign is not simply to reduce cost. It is to breathe new life into a treasure so that its meaning is enjoyed for many years to come.
Can multiple heirloom jewellery pieces be combined into one design?
Yes. Many clients bring several jewellery pieces, and we thoughtfully combine gemstones from different items into one meaningful design—such as a ring, pendant, or bracelet.
Will the redesigned jewellery still feel meaningful?
Absolutely. In many ways, redesigning jewellery deepens its meaning because the original stones and materials continue their story in a piece you will wear and enjoy.
How long does jewellery redesign take?
Most custom jewellery redesign projects take approximately 4–6 weeks once your project is confirmed and the design is finalized. Simpler pieces may be completed sooner, while more intricate designs may take a little longer depending on their complexity. The timeline can also vary if we’re sourcing new gems to match yours and refine your design.
If you would like your redesigned piece ready by a specific date, please let me know at the beginning of the project so we can adjust your project’s timeline accordingly.
Can fragile or antique gemstones be reused?
If a gem holds special meaning to you, we’ll do our best to re-set it. During our consultation, I carefully inspect each stone to determine whether it is suitable for the new design and everyday wear.
Can jewellery redesign be done remotely?
Yes. Many clients who live outside Toronto complete the entire process through phone and video consultations, with secure shipping used when needed.
