Can soldered jewellery be melted into new designs? Not always. Jewellery that contains solder—such as chains or resized rings—can introduce impurities when melted. For this reason, jewellers often avoid melting heavily soldered jewellery when redesigning gold into a new custom piece.

Thinking of redesigning old jewellery by melting your gold? The first step is understanding whether your gold is suitable for a custom redesign. Key factors include gold colour (yellow, white, or rose), karat purity, and overall material quality. Gold is measured in karats—24k being pure gold—while most jewellery is typically 10k, 14k, or 18k, created by blending gold with other metals for durability and colour. When melting gold for custom jewellery design, the new piece usually retains the same colour and karat as the original, unless high-purity gold is intentionally re-alloyed. If mixed metals or different karats are combined, the final result becomes a unique, but less predictable, alloy. For successful jewellery redesign and gold melting projects, your original pieces must meet specific requirements in purity, quantity, and composition to ensure a high-quality custom outcome.
