Custom Engagement Rings in Toronto: Process, Timeline, and Pricing

Designing a custom engagement ring is one of my favourite ways to help couples celebrate their love story, and it does not have to feel overwhelming or complicated. When you collaborate with me to create your custom wedding or engagement ring, I will guide you through each step so you feel informed, creative, and excited—not stressed.

Whether you are starting from a clear vision or just a feeling, we will shape it into a bespoke engagement ring that feels deeply personal and beautifully made in my jewelry studio in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood.

At a Glance: How Our Custom Design Process Works

Here is what you can typically expect when we design your custom engagement ring together:

  • Your unique wedding, engagement ring and/or wedding band will be created and handcrafted by me, Pamela. We’ll start with a phone conversation where you’ll share your vision and wishlist, and I’ll review our design process in detail and answer any questions you may have.
  • The timeline for custom engagement ring projects is often 4–6 weeks from the moment we confirm your custom design project with a 50% deposit. The actual project length depends on design complexity, gem availability, and the time you need to provide feedback on your design. If you’d like your ring completed by a specific day, please let me know at the start of your project. We’ve never missed a deadline in nearly 20 years.
  • Your budget is discussed openly from the beginning so I can recommend the best diamonds, gemstones, metals, and designs to meet your budget.
  • To start, it is helpful to bring inspiration images, a comfort range for your budget, and your design wish list, including diamond or gemstone cut, metal colour and karat, and setting style.
  • Your ring will be handcrafted in Toronto. Most design collaborations involve two visits to our Leslieville studio—one at the beginning and the second one to pick up your ring. Additional studio visits may take place as required. We’ll continue our collaboration via phone, text, and email to ensure we realize your vision. If you live outside Toronto, we can collaborate perfectly well via video calls and rely on secure shipping services as required.

Designing Your Custom Ring: Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Your Engagement Ring Design Call

Our work together begins with a friendly, no-pressure engagement ring design phone consultation. We talk about yours or your partner’s lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and any ideas you have collected—from Pinterest boards to quick sketches. During this conversation, I will ask questions about ring size, preferred metals, and whether you plan to incorporate heirloom stones or remodel your existing jewellery.

If you are not yet sure about the design you’d like, that is perfectly okay. Many of my clients arrive with only a few reference photos or a general direction like “timeless but unique,” “minimalist,” “vintage-inspired,” or “love of nature,” and I’ll help translate that into specific design options. Together, we review different setting styles, diamond shapes, and band profiles so you can see how each choice changes the overall look and feel of your ring.

In most cases, our phone design consultation will be shortly followed by a custom price quote that includes the details discussed during our call.

If you are in Toronto and would like to proceed to the next stage of our design process, we’ll meet in our Toronto studio. If you live outside Toronto, we’ll continue to collaborate virtually.

Step 2: Meet in Our Toronto Studio to Refine Your Design and Select Diamonds and Gems

Once we have a sense of the design direction and the ring’s price feels comfortable to you, we’ll meet in our studio in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood, or via video call if you live outside Toronto.

The purpose of this in-person meeting is to continue refining your ring’s design by drawing multiple sketches, discussing their merits, and allowing you to select your favourite details. I also invite you to share any small touches—like symbols, flowers, or birthstones—that we can add to make your ring even more meaningful.

We’ll also confirm important measurements such as yours or your partner’s ring size, gem dimensions, and cut or cuts. We have many design aids to help with your metal and gemstone selection.

If you are sure of your diamond or gemstone selection and cut, I’ll do my best to have a curated selection of available lab-grown or natural diamonds, sapphires, and other gems custom-selected for your ring based on your stated preferences. I’m a GIA-certified gemologist and will use my gem-grading skills to source beautiful gems for your ring and explain their unique characteristics as we inspect them in our studio.

I also love incorporating heirloom stones and repurposed stones into new designs. Perhaps you have a family ring tucked away in a drawer or a gemstone that deserves a new life. I can carefully evaluate the stones, confirm their suitability for everyday wear, and design a setting that honours both the original piece and your current style.

Whether you choose a new centre stone, an heirloom diamond, or a mix of both, I will recommend a setting that keeps your gemstone secure while showcasing its best features.

Step 3: Creating Your Bespoke Engagement Ring Design

With your stones selected, I translate our ideas into a detailed design. Depending on the project, this may include hand sketches, digital renderings, or CAD models, allowing you to visualize the ring from multiple angles. You will have the opportunity to review the design, request adjustments, and confirm proportions before we begin crafting your one-of-a-kind wedding ring.

With our craft and your feedback, we will refine your ring’s design until it feels exactly right—balanced, wearable, and uniquely yours.

Step 4: Handcrafting Your Ring in Our Toronto Studio

Once you approve the design, I begin crafting your ring in my Leslieville studio in Toronto. Every custom engagement ring is hand-built using traditional goldsmithing techniques combined with modern tools for precision. I shape and assemble the metal, oversee that your gemstones are set securely and beautifully, and carefully finish the surfaces so the ring feels smooth and comfortable on the hand.

Because your ring is handmade in Toronto, I maintain close control over every stage of production and perform detailed quality checks along the way. I inspect each prong, verify that stones are aligned, and confirm that the ring size matches the measurements we took during our studio meeting.

Step 5: Appraising Your Ring for Insurance Purposes by an Accredited Jewelry Appraiser

Once your ring is completed, it will be appraised by a trusted, GIA-accredited appraiser. You will receive a certificate confirming your ring’s value. Most insurance companies will request a copy of this certificate to insure your ring.

Step 6: Caring for Your Ring and Warranty

I will provide you with helpful tips, specific to your ring, for cleaning and caring for it at home so it remains sparkling. You can also review our detailed jewelry care tips and our recommended cleaning products that have proven to work.

Your ring will be crafted with utmost care to ensure its durability. In the unlikely event of a broken part due to a manufacturing defect or a strong impact, please let us know immediately. I will advise you on next steps, which will likely involve bringing your ring to the studio so we can make the necessary repairs. We will cover the cost of repairs resulting from manufacturing defects and may charge a fee for repairs resulting from accidental impacts.

Timeline for Custom Engagement Ring Projects

One of the most common questions I hear is, “How long will my custom ring take?” The typical timeline for custom engagement rings Toronto clients commission with me is about 4–6 weeks. Simpler designs may be ready sooner, and more intricate pieces can take a bit longer.

Several factors influence this timeline, including stone availability, the number of design revisions, the time required to receive your feedback, design complexity, and seasonal peaks such as the busy holiday season in November and December.

If you are working toward a specific proposal date, please let us know from the outset so we can ensure your ring is ready for your special day. My goal is always to deliver a ring that feels thoughtfully made rather than rushed.

How Budget and Materials Shape Your Ring

Custom does not automatically mean more expensive than purchasing a ready-made ring. Instead, it means your budget is directed entirely toward choices that matter to you. In our first conversation, we will talk openly about your comfort range so I can propose options that are both beautiful and realistic.

Several elements influence the final cost of a bespoke engagement ring. Stone type and size are major factors, with larger or rarer diamonds and gemstones typically representing a higher portion of the budget. Metal choice—such as 14k or 18k gold in white, yellow, or rose, or platinum—also affects price, as does the complexity of the design and number of accent stones.

By understanding what is most important to you, I can suggest creative ways to balance impact and investment, like choosing a slightly smaller centre diamond with exceptional cut quality, or incorporating heirloom stones to add meaning without increasing material costs.

If You Are Not Sure What You Want Yet

You do not need a perfect Pinterest board to begin. Many of my clients start with only a few adjectives—“modern but warm,” “vintage inspired,” or “low-profile for everyday wear”—and we build from there. During our studio meeting, I can show examples of different settings, band shapes, and gem shape and cut combinations so you can respond to what you like and what you do not.

From there, I narrow down options and sketch ideas that reflect your feedback. Often, a single detail—like a curved band to sit flush with a future wedding ring, or a bezel that protects the stone for an active lifestyle—will point us toward the right overall direction. My role is to ask thoughtful questions, offer clear explanations, and make the custom ring design process feel enjoyable and approachable.

What If I Don’t Know My Partner’s Ring Size?

Since we are creating a ring from scratch just for you and/or your partner, it’s best to know their exact ring size. Ideally, it’s best if you and your partner attend the first studio meeting so I can precisely measure their ring size.

If you are planning a surprise proposal, however, we can explore different ideas to discreetly find their ring size and ensure that the ring’s design will allow for size adjustments should they be required after your amazing proposal

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you design custom engagement rings in Toronto?

Yes, we specialize in creating custom wedding and engagement rings, as well as wedding bands, anniversary rings, and meaningful one-of-a-kind jewellery. I collaborate with my clients through a series of personalized one-to-one phone and in-person appointments. We also serve clients across Canada and beyond through virtual consultations and secure shipping services.

Is a Custom Engagement Ring More Expensive Than Buying a Ready-Made One?

Sometimes, but not always. A custom engagement ring is designed and crafted just for you with dedicated one-on-one attention, while rings in retail stores are often beautifully mass-produced.

Because your ring is created specifically for you, we can thoughtfully align the materials, gemstone size, and design details with your budget from the very beginning. Some clients spend a similar amount to ready-made options, while others choose to invest more in rare gemstones or intricate details that require labour-intensive techniques such as hand-engraving.

Can You Work with Heirloom Stones or Repurposed Stones?

Absolutely. I often transform inherited rings or loose gemstones into new designs that honour their history while reflecting your current style. I will carefully inspect each stone to ensure it is suitable for the new setting and everyday wear.

Can We Work Together Virtually?

Yes. Many clients complete the entire custom ring design process through phone, email, and video meetings, with courier or insured shipping used for stones and finished pieces when needed. For local clients, in-person visits to my Toronto studio are always welcome at key milestones like stone viewing or final fitting.

What Are Your Payment Terms?

Most projects are split into two equal payments: a 50% deposit to begin your design, and the remaining 50% when you pick up your finished ring.
